Healing Top 5 Friday June 21, 2013

Last week was surely an adventure in our Top 5 Friday.   Hopefully you learned a little bit about 3 of my favorite things, Coffee, Beer, and Math.   Throw in some cool music and street art, I’d say it was a pretty good Top 5 Friday.

This week’s top 5 is centered around the idea of healing.   Healing can come in many different forms and fashion.  Some of us heal by going for a run, painting, writing, listening to our favorite artist, reading a good book again, or even playing a familiar game.  This past week, your humble blogger experienced a great week that focused on some healing.   That theme has been running through my mind and therefore is the theme for this week’s top 5.

Today is also the longest day of the year in the northern hemisphere, otherwise known as the summer solstice.  Get out there and get some Vitamin D today, the sun will be in the sky longer today than any other day of the year.

1.)

Strawberry Kale Green Smoothie

Food has some great healing properties, as I have found out.   The kids over at YoungandRaw.com have some great raw food smoothie recipes for you.  Some of these look so good.   I might have one later on…while watching the sun go down…at the river.  Recipes are over here at YoungandRaw.com

2.)

One of the ways that I try to heal from something is to learn something new.  Preferably something that requires some time and careful thought.  A manual task that requires my full concentration so that anything that is going on will slip away and I can start to heal.  The manly men over at ArtofManliness.com have inspired me to try and roast my own coffee.  It looks simple enough and is a task that I think I can handle.  Might be trying this one out this weekend.  You should too, or just try and learn some new skill!  Instructions are here.

3.)

How To Listen When Someone is Venting

Ok, so maybe you aren’t trying to heal yourself.   Maybe you are helping out a friend who is in need of healing.   Sometimes when people are trying to process feelings, they end up doing some “venting.”   The super intelligent genius Mark Goulston over at Lifehacker.com has a handy guide for you if you are on the other end of a vent.  This will teach you some key things to do while helping your friends out and understanding why they are venting.    Read through it and prepare yourself.  You never know when someone is going to need you to listen.  You can find the guide here.

4.)

I like to think of myself as a runner.  I started running again in 2012 and in 6 moths I finished my first half-marathon.   I went from overworked campaign operative who didn’t have time to work out to running for 2 hours straight in 6 months.  I was pretty amazed with myself and I was hooked.  Despite a few injuries here and there, I’ve pretty much been running 2-3 times a week.  The only thing I usually take with me is my iPhone so I can track my runs on Nike+ and listen to music.   It never occurred to me to run without music.  I figured I would get bored or not have a good rhythm to run with.  I read an article over at Runners World that has changed my mind.  It is all about meditative running.  Running has been a healing activity for me and I think I’m going to start doing some meditative runs to help that process out.   You can read the article over at RunnersWorld.com.

5.)

I’ve done a lot of talk about “mental” healing or ways to metaphysically heal yourself.  To make sure that I can keep my man card and provide you with some essential skills, here’s how to help someone heal by tying a tourniquet.  Instructions here form the Army Study Guide.  Do yourself a favor and don’t do a google image search for tourniquet if you have recently eaten.   I hope I never have to tie one of these, but I’m prepared now if I need to!

Thanks for reading this weeks Healing Top 5.   This blog has been a good healing thing for me and I enjoy giving you all the random information you want.   If you have some things that you would like to see discussed on this blog, leave a comment and we’ll start featuring some your suggestions!

Thanks and have a great weekend!
