Remember Bill Watterson’s syndicated cartoon strip Calvin and Hobbes? I never fully appreciated the sardonic outlook of its precocious six-year old and his anthropomorphic tiger until I became an adult, which tells you something; anything worth remembering has to appeal to a wide spectrum of ages. Calvin and Hobbes was sweet and funny as a kid, but I now see it as clever and borderline genius. So I was excited, overly so, when I came across Michael S. Den Beste’s series of photoshopped images that place the duo in real life photographs. It is a mish-mash of the imaginary world, the world of the comic strip and the world inside Calvin’s head, mixed with a far-off reality. Again, really clever and ingenious.
